the story of anchor bar

As far as running a bar goes, our original owner Leo Derderian really said it best:

“You put yourself in the other guys shoes. See how you would feel with his complaint. Maybe I learned that from being on the barstool side for so long…you’ve got to try and understand the customer. If he says the drink is weak, give him a bottle. Make him happy.”

Leo’s philosophy has carried through to present-day, where the Anchor bar is still the same ole’ dive with a fresh take on stiff drinks and good eats. We like to think that when you step through the doors to the Anchor Bar, you’ll feel the memories and rousing energy that Leo and his friends filled the bar with all those years ago.

I stop by the Anchor Bar every time I'm in Detroit (every few months), because I like divey bars that are filled with locals, and have good food served by nice people. It's easy to see why everyone likes Anchor Bar. It's my fave in all of Detroit!

Exactly what u want in a dive bar. Great beer selection and super cheap never seen $4 Stella. Lol. Very friendly staff n patrons. We'll be back tonight after the game!!

Five Stars for this cold beer! Quick service. Possibly my new bar to go go after work with coworkers or whenever the desire for a cold beer arises when I am in the downtown area. Ample seating. The menu is simple burgers and your basic bar appetizers. I ordered the grilled ham and cheese, it's just like one you would prepare at home.

The Anchor Bar is an institution in downtown Detroit. They have a great menu even though this looks like a neighborhood dive bar in the middle of downtown. Go and check out all the photographs above the bar of notable patrons from the past. Come on in, grab a stool and have a burger and a beer.
